Cheap immobilizer ideas (hidden switches etc)?
I'm getting tired of removing the fuel pump relay or distributor rotor. Anyone ever come up with a cheap immobilizer like a hidden switch that kills the fuel pump relay or using an existing switch to control the relay?
Thanks, Graham

Run a remote switch to the DME box ground wire. If that is left open, nothing in the car works. We used this for my brothers club race car kill switch.

Just use any switch which can not be seen but easily reached from the drivers seat.
I would not disconnect the ground wire from the DME (although the previous post had good results). When the ground is disconnected and power is turned on, current can be sourced through all sensor inputs and outputs to ground, which are NOT designed to source power. It is much safer to cut power.

A time delayed kill sw is good theft prevention. You want the car to die as the car is being driven away. This should be part of a multi layered system.

Guys, the car has CIS and CDI not DME. What would be an effective yet safe way to rig up a kill switch for a stock SC... a kill switch which won't screw up the electronics?

Carjacking is a problem on Vancouver Island? I mean, all escapes to the N. American continent easily cut off? D-OH! Then the Canadian cops aren't doing their jobs well, are they? Don't feel bad...they aren't doing so hot down here as well...

I have a $40 heavy-duty Bosch racing-type cutoff switch--twist the handle 90 degrees and it comes out and cuts off the ground--and it's under the trunk carpeting. (My battery happens to be relocated to the smuggler's box, which makes that location easy, but you could put it anywhere.) I don't even bother to take the handle--the key, in effect--with me, I just twist it out and leave it under the carpet. Between finding the handle, reinstallng it and then firing up a car with chokeless PMO carburetors, I figger I'm safe from an thief under the age of 60.

Any experienced car thief will probably find a hidden switch no matter where you put it. Why not do something different, such as turn your driving light switch into a kill switch. Or turn the ashtray into a switch so that the ignition or fuel pump is off when the ashtray is open. Or maybe even put a contact switch under the seat so that all you have to do is move the seat all the way back or forward to trigger the imobilizer. The idea here is to be creative and not obvious.

Hi Guys,
It may be a bit overkill, but usually I pull the ign coil wire and take it with me (knowing I have a spare back home) plus I use a club. I think that this is about as imobile as it can practically be. I never really like to pull my FP relay (cuz in my car, the FP does nothing as it was bypassed by some fool PO in its' past life). Switches can almost all be found given the time, if the crook has it. Beyond this if they really want your ride that bad it is gone anyway by whatever means. My thots anyway... Damn crooks! Most immobile cars are found vandalised! But you still may have your undriven (by a crook) car. .Steven 1980 SC |
