Clutch - What do I need to do?
I have my engine out for a transmission rebuild and plan to replace the clutch myself. I don't believe the clutch has been replaced in the 100k the car has on it.
I see kits from our host for about $1100 - though I have recently replaced the Clutch cable and helper spring. How do I determine what I need to complete of the remaining $1000 of parts or so? I am on a tight budget and spending $1000 means spending less somewhere else - but I want to do it right! Thanks - jcsjcs |
At a minimum I would replace the pilot bearing, pressure plate ,throwout bearing and clutch disc. A rear main seal might be advisable while in there but I have never had one leak even at high mileage. Check and lube the bushings on the cross shaft and the condition of the sleeve on the input shaft(both are in the transmission bell houusing)

It's the SACHS Power clutch kit. |
15 years ago, I was able to change the entire clutch kit for $400, but no more. To do it right, you need to change the clutch, the T/O bearing, the pilot bearing (cheap), and the pressure plate -- and resurface the flywheel. I would definitely change the rear main seal when you do have it all apart. Mine only leaked once and after that I changed the seal everytime the engine comes out ... so it never leaked again.
If you inspect the flywheel and the pressure plate and find that they are in very good shape and your budget is too tight, I would skip them and replace the clutch disc and the bearings only on the theory that ... an 84 Porsche 911 will likely have the engine out every couple years anyway so you can do it next time. |
