86 Carrera sugar scoop to H4

HI guys, I searched everything I could think of and didn't really find what I was looking for. I have an 86 Coupe with the original sealed beam sugar scoop lights. I am buying the Bosche H4 assembly upgrade from our host. What I am not sure of, is will I need some type of adapter to get them to work. I saw some of the 87 and up needed an adapter, and 83 and below did not, but couldn't find the answer for an 86. Also, do I need to add relays to the lights. Thanks

If I remember correctly the H4 upgrade I bought years ago matching the '88 style H4's fit my '78 Targa perfectly, "drop in".

Agree, you won't need an adaptor, the sugar scoop headlight plug will plug right into the h4s.

However, if you haven't done so already, you should install headlight relays to take the strain off of your high beam/turn signal switch. Our host sells a nice relay set that had easy-to-follow instructions.

Yes, to install the "Euro H4"s you remove the USA spec headlight adjustment ring and then the Euros use the single bottom screw. Also, the retaining rings are sold separately on the primered H4s. Only the chrome H4s do not use a trim ring.

As an aside, you can fit H4 headlights into the USA sugar scoops. The fit is a Motorcycle H4 by Bosch. They are bright enough that I did not notice any improvement when I converted to Euro H4s.

I wouldn't get a motorcycle headlight.

Bosch, Hella, Carello, Cibie all make H4 headlights that fit in the sugar scoops. Very common in Europe.

Here is a new Hella H4 that Pelican sells:

BTW, the Bosch and Hella H4's that fit in sugar scoops have the same lighting pattern and bulb as the 'euro' H4's. Work just as well.

Thanks guys, should have checked our host first. I was confusing this with a different headlight option I've seen discussed (that's considerably more expensive) I've used the Hella replacment H4's on BMW's and they're great!
