Pricing a great find please help

I found for sale a 1982 Guards Red SC with tea tray, single owner car with 31000, miles. The owner wants to sell. Can you guys chip in with your thought's on the car's worth. From what I understand (have not seen yet) the car is impeccable , owned by a doctor 28 years.
thanks for your input

I would think that if everything checks out PPI wise and it is indeed impecable, it may be worth more than 20, I would say if you get it for 20 you stole it. Good luck and can't wait to see some pictures if you do get her

FWIW, I recently got a pristine '86 Carrera 3.2 (three owner) with complete service history, original paint, non-rebuilt gear box and engine (with excellent leak down/compression numbers), brand new clutch and a very well-preserved interior for 22K.

31000 miles on a 28 year old car is a little bit scary. it means the bulk of it's life the car was sitting but hopefully the owner drove it on a regular basis. if not you may have a lot of items that will need attention/replacing. make sure you have a thorough ppi done by someone who really knows the ins and outs of an sc before you make an offer.

Be sure they check the exhaust side head studs very carefully, if they are not broken yet corroded they most likely WILL be broken in the near future. Also see if the normal upgrades have been done, pop-off and carerra tensioners.

just don't think 31k miles means low maintenance. A lot of things (like bushings, plastic, rubber) deteriorate with time regardless of miles. I think 20k is a fair price but you can pick up exc. condition Carrera for low 20s (friend sold a cherry one for $24k asking while back) and it has more power and better brakes than sc.

I know of an 87 Targa, one owner, I think >30K miles, Black/Black, that will be coming up soon for just over $25K (I think) and it has had all maintenance items (Eng oil, G50 oil, brake flush, new brake lines, new brake pads, etc. done to be sure it's as close to perfect as possible. Even fixed a very minor oil seepage on the oil fed tensioners! Gorgeous car, wish I could buy it!

Also be aware that the SCs came originally with an 85 mph speedometer. Most first owners changed them for the typical 160 mph speedo. This means whatever mileage shows needs to be confirmed with a careful review of the service records since it may have a new speedo. The speedo will also usually have a production date stamp on it,s back. Easy to pull it out enough to see if it,s date is consistant as well. The car might indeed have such low miles but most don,t. Speedos were also easily disconnected in the early models which prevented miles accumulating and the odometer internal gear was easily broken which also stopped the miles.
I just looked at a 993. According to the carfax it had 65000 on it in 2006. It now has 68000. I am sceptical about the young enthusiast owner buying it and only driving it 3000 mi in 4 years. If it all checks out $20 sounds good . You can find nice 993 's under 30 now.

My '82 is a gray market ROW car that came into the U.S. in '83 with a 150 mph speedo.

The SCs really are bullet proof. I've driven the pizz outta mine for the last 7 yrs, about to turn 200k miles, burns less than a qt. of oil between changes and has the original rings (nicasil/Mahle pistons). When I bought it with 174k miles on it I had it gone through to make it daily driver dependable (at an ungodly, "I'll never ever sell this car!" expense ) and all the engine needed was a valve grind and a camshaft regrind (pitted cams are common with the 3L).

Obviously I am talking about cars factory built to US specs. ROW means "rest of world"I think Canadian spec cars might have had the 85 mph speedo too as they are more US spec than ROW

Yeah now you only need to worry about broken and disconnected speedos and new used correct ones . High mileage shouldn,t scare anyone away from a good SC.They are very tough cars.
