Thinking about having my longhood professionally wrapped....

So I have a beautiful 66 912 with a 66 911 engine installed. This vehicle is beautiful, and although the paint is not perfect, its not bad nor in need of a repaint. I just think it would be nice to have it be a different color for a couple years.

The car is currently green-granite, which for all intents and purposes is a gray color.

I do not want flat black. Maybe a matte color?

I was thinking a lime green or a robins egg blue.

Give me some input on what you think would look good on a narrow body 911 with flat-six fuchs.

Thanks!

So far the budget is only for a single color. The question is, what direction should I take it?

wraps look ok on a race car from a distance....but up close you will see seams and such....dont think a single color would look that good....but that is just my opinion.

If wrapping could be done pretty cheaply, it would be fun to show up at every autocross with my '73 a different color (I'm tired of silver). I'd start with Tangerine and then Viper Green. Then probably on to Gemini Blue.

It surely wouldn't pass muster on the "concourse"

But sounds like fun anyway. I vote Viper Green.

The longhood has such tiny panels that they should each fall under the 48" wide sheet.

I think the roof would get a seam down the middle.

Are there any arguments against this? I know it doesn't damage the paint under the wrap. How do you guys feel about going with a Matte color?

I vote sure. If (or when) you don't like it you can simply remove it. problem is the colour. For me I'd always wanted a medium to light grey would look good, and that's pretty much what you have so ... maybe post some pics.

Sounds like fun if its no damage to the original paint and is reasonably priced. I have a silver long hood and while it looks awesome under good lighting (the silver shows the contours so beautifully) there are times I'd love to have something in one of the primary colors so it stands out more. I think yellow looks great on the early cars.

How much $$$ are we talking to do this?

I have a buddy that wraps and he says min of $1500-2000 for one job. You had better be dead set on what direction you want to go before you get into wrapping.

The arguments against it are that it is pretty expensive ($2K and up), can never approach the quality of an actual paint job in appearance or longevity, and when you remove it, the cleanup necessary to restore the original paint is extensive and time consuming (it does leave an adhesive residue that will take a couple quarts of solvent and a lot of elbow grease to clean off). For a temporary, radical graphic design, there might be a reason, but for a solid color, I would never consider it. Talk to someone who has done it first before you take the leap. Send a PM to Jim Copp (user "lowyder993s") and ask him about his overall experience with wrapping his race car.

He went back to paint for his latest livery.

TT
