engine hoist attachment points??
 

Where are the best attachment points when using a engine hoist to remove the engine from a stand. I see the hook at the back of the case near the throttle bell crank and I would assume you use the fan belt cover/muffler mount for the front. Is this correct?

I use three chains. One chain with a hook thru the loop at the back of the case as you described. The other two chains are attached to the spanner plate (the wide flat plate which accepts the two bolts holding the motor in the car) that is bolted to the engine carrier bracket. I use the mounting bolts from the car and two right angles/L-shaped angles with two Grade 8 washers per bolt thru the L-plates. I'm not sure what you mean by the fan belt cover (don't go lifting off the fan area) and don't use the muffler bracket. Lift it from the engine carrier somehow.

A good thing to have with the hoist is an equalizer. It spreads the chains out a little more, keeping them from coming up to the hoist boom at a sharp angle. When they come up to the boom at a sharp angle, the chains can be pushing against things like the fan housing and the fuel lines across the rear of the intake manifold (if you have a 3.2 Motronic motor). Plus, the equalizer helps you balance the motor front-to-rear (that's what it's really for).

By fan belt cover I mean the engine carrier. The spanner as you call it bolts to the engine mounts and the carrier. The lower half of the carrier covers the bottom of the crank pulley/fan belt.

I didn't think of making right angle brackets. I was thinking of looping the chain through the top of the engine carrier.

I use a rear motor mount from an unknown year car bolted to the rear of the motor. I have bolted to it, a piece of angle iron 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 1/4" about 2' long. I have lifting rings at either end of the angle iron. I use a three chain harness to lift the motor utilizing the lifting ring normally found on the case. If it's not there I will use a spare that I keep for such purposes.

This assembly has served me well for many years.

The hook on the case near the firewall will support the whole engine and is pretty much at its CG.

A friend and I welded up this engine lift bracket. It's just made of square steel tubing with welded on pick-up points. It's designed to lift from the outer ends of the rear engine mounts on one side and the lift point on the case near the breather. There's an attachment on top for the hoist. Works fine, lousy photo though.
