Ignition switch differences
 

I ordered a new ignition switch for my 73 911 E because I was not getting power from the switch to the starter. Bought a new ignition switch but now have power all the time from the switch to the starter.

Could I have gotten the wrong ignition switch?

Switch off (key out) 12 volts to pole 50 (starter wire)

Turn the key 1 and 2 clicks and zero volts to pole 50 (as it should be) All electronics work.

Turn the key to the start position and get 12 volts to 50 (as it should).

So why am I getting 12 volts to 50 with the key off.

Spent hours trouble shooting this yesterday. pulled all fuses and disconnected everything in the engine compartment, problem persists. If I rewired the ignition switch wrong, what miss placed wire would feed power to 50 when in the off position?

I am thinking the ignition switch is bad or the wrong one.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Terminal 50 is the only momentary On-Off position in the switch assembly.

Maybe you connected the 12V source wire to the wrong terminal on the switch.

I believe most 911 ignition switch connections are consistent from year to year (same wire color code and connections).

Regardless of how I positioned the wires, 50 should be isolated except when in the start position. I believe I got a defective switch. A replacement comes tomorrow (Friday). Hopefully this will be an easy fix.

replaced switch with a second new one and works like a champ.

Hours trouble shooting an electrical problem and it was the original part I replaced. go figure

Diagnosis was time well spent, if not this time, for the next occurrence. How would you have felt had you replaced the switch and found out it was something else, and simple? Most places won't allow you to return electrical components unless they're faulty.

Good to hear it's running well again.
