I saw some of the NASCAR race last weekend and I wondered how the times compared to Porsche times. Does anyone know??

heres some info. I ran accross this at a cobra replica site, they seemed to think a 20,000 dollar cobra could outrun a nascar stock car on a road course. I don't know if the course layout was the same.
Save Mart/Kragen 350 NASCAR Winston Cup: Rusty Wallace, 1:10.652, 99.309 (mph) · Snap-On Tools/AAA 200 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series: Steve Petty 1:11.782 (97.746 mph). · Grand Prix of Sonoma American Le Man Series: Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello (Audi Prototype) 1:20.683 (112.440 mph); Karl Wendlinger and Olivier Beretta (Dodge Viper GTS) 1:31.779 (98.846 mph); Kirk Muller and Lucas Luhr (Porsche 911 GT) 1:35.707 (94.789 mph) ------------------ Craig 73T in many pieces |

you also need to remember in the numbers comparing NASCA and ALMS, NASCAR uses the bypass at Sears, so there are less corners, so the Audi is much faster over a longer course with more tight turns.

For comparison to street cars, Excellence did an article with a shootout of several Porsche Turbos, including a 959 at Sears point. Danny Sullivan was one of the drivers. The lap times all hovered around the 2 min mark.
Also keep in mind that Winston Cup cars are not really designed as road racers. They have a lot of HP, but weigh in at over 3000 lbs, and are limited by the rules to fairly narrow tires (8 inch I think). I am suprised they go as fast as they do. Tom |
