2.9RSR or 996TT??

A 73 2.9L RSR is going to be auctioned in Arizona at the Biltmore Auction, Jan 18, 2002. $125,500.

Assume you have the 125K to spend. What would you buy, this or a new 996TT?

For me it's simple. Buy the new car and drive it to death. If you buy the RSR diving it like I would use it, would ruin it for what it is, its not a daily drive and I can't spend that much money for a garage queen!

FWIW- If I were going to spend that kind of money I would look at the Ruf GT-3 car. No turbo and guicker than snot. Maybe geard alittle tall for this side of the pond but that is easy to fix.

That's easy for me too, but I would pick the RS/R. There have been several new 996 TTs that have needed major engine work done under warranty locally. If you only considered this from an investment stand point (I know - what am I talking about!), the RS/R is done depreciating. Only problem with the car is no 2.8 or 2.9L RSR engine (looks single plug on closer look!). What a screamer that would be .............

I would buy the RS/RSR, drive it often, drive it hard, and not feel a bit of guilt about it. ;)

Call me stupid but i would get RSR...

996TT is new production car...you can always get one (in case you can pay)...RSR is a collectable classic...in ten years you can probably get three 996TT's for this one...

I bet it's more exhilarating to drive, too ;)

becareful, I would not call that car concours, look at the floor, it is full of dents, if someone like Gunnar Racing had restored it, there would not be any dents.

I keep meaning to ask someone, what the hell are "airport gears", and how did they get that name? For people who are always late to the airport and missing planes? ;)

pwd72s 12-23-2001 07:52 PM

"Airport Gears"...back in the good old days, whenever that was, a lot of sports car races were done on old airports...Sebring comes to mind, but it wasn't the only track then. That usually meant a flat track, short straights, lots of turns. "Airport gears" is simply a way to describe one of the "short gear" gear sets...kind of like "hillclimb gears", only I'd imagine those were even shorter?
Hope this pitiful explanation helps...

Thanks, Paul. FWIW, my hypothetical choice is between '73 2.7 RS touring, (not as fast but much better street car), and a nice 993tt, (like it better than 996), these two cost about the same these days. Also $50G's apiece cheaper than ones here. My .02.

RSR. The TT is a street machine and I'd be scared to death to run it at its limits on the street. But I guess I'd love to scare myself to death on the track in an RSR? Yeah, that's logical

targa88 12-24-2001 04:36 PM

Unfortunately it is like comparing apples with oranges.
I would tend to more partial to the RSR - as a true classic. I just don't get the new TT. Certainly has plenty of power, all kind of electronics (impossible to work on), water cooled - modern technology. But, nothing beats that visceral feeling of the true classic RSR.
Fortunately I don't have to make this decision!!!

Fishcop 12-24-2001 04:45 PM

Romeo Sierra Romeo!

At least I can be sure I have purchased an unquestionable classic.

Ahh......dream on:(

Hands down an RSR! Don't get me wrong, the 996 TT is a sweet machine. But the RSR has sooooo much more soul! Of course it would be hard for me to comute in it. But who cares.:D
