Question Front condensor blower

I cannot hear my front condensor blower running. Is it supposed to be on whenever the a/c is on? Should it be audible? It is new, so it ought to be OK.

The fan is supposed to be on whenever the AC is on. To test if its working, attach 2 wires directly from the battery. Mine was completely frozen and required a replacement.

Decolliber,

Long discussions on this earlier this spring. Pls make sure that your car was updated with the fuse inline to the front fan.

If not, they can sieze and then catch fire, resulting in the loss of the car.

Do a search in this forum for postings on this and you should find the old posts.

Yes, I have read these. I just put in a new front condesnor fan and a fuse link. The problem is that I cannot _hear_ the motor running, so I am wondering if it is inaudible, or if it does not run all the time, or Iif need to check to see if power is going to the motor and/or if the motor is OK.

I believe it only runs when the compressor is running... and the compressor doesn't run all the time because it is thermostatically controlled. Mine turns off and on with the compressor unit. ('85 Carrera)

Thank you jlex, that is exactly what I wanted to know! So to verify that the front condensor fan is running OK, I need to first check to see if the compressor is running, then I should be able to hear the front fan working if I put my ear to it (?)

If you have the a/c on and set to max cool with the doors open it should be on. If in doubt about the compressor running just open the lid and check to see the clutch is turning. You can feel the air from the condensor fan motor from under the front of the car-just put your hand under the condensor. If it's not running and the compressor is TURN IT OFF QUICKLY! You could damage the system due to very high head pressures as a result. Any more questions you have-I will post replies.

You should also be able to engage the compressor without the car running, by turning the key to the "Run" position.

On my car, with the key in the "Run" position, if I turn on the A/C, I can hear the compressor "click" and the fan run.

Thanks very much for the replies. Last weekend I put in a new rear condensor, new dryer, and new front condensor fan. After the system was charged this AM, I could not hear the front blower, but after driving 15 miles home, I could hear the blower clearly when I opened the trunk. So no problem.
I also installed a new fresh air blower, and added a 10 amp fuse, because the old one was a glob of melted black plastic inside. A fire hazard?
