Need some pointers on the 993 flange thing
I have started to try and flip the flanges on the one 993 heat exchanger to install onto my 964 transplant, and I am not sure I am cutting in the correct location.
When you look into the flange, there is a nice welded line which is the joint between the flange and the pipe. I am not 100% sure where on this line I should be cutting. I cleaned one of them up a bit and found a nice lip at the top of the welded line and assumed this to be the correct location - but it feels now like I am just cutting to much  Here is the best picture I could get with the phone - am I cutting in the wrong location? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1277990208.jpg |
You really need to grind the weld down until it comes off. try and not take any extra material, Kevin

What we do is plunge an end mill in there and machine out the weld and HAZ then reweld them in correct location but correct me if I am wrong don't the 964 3.6 have 4 bolt hols on the exhaust so you can use either exchangers?
|
Thank you Kevin and Ben. As I do not have the benefit of the end mill you have Ben, the only tool available to me is a Dremel. Sounds like I will be grinding and cutting for quite some time then!!! As I have already cut into the exchanger, there is n turning back :)
Ben, only the 993 has the 4 bolt pattern for the exhaust - unfortunately... Ben do you have one exchanger that has already had this work done on it that you would consider an exchange deal on for my half started one? |
privat message me i can tell you how to make a jig, stew09@AOL.COM

if doing it by hand I have done it with a die grinder not a dremel and used thicker cutting wheels it tacks longer but can be done. I gues my question next is are you going to weld it up or have it done by someone? If by someone that is a professional they may want to do the rest of the grinding I know I would |
No, I will be welding them up - I have had some emails with Kevin, and he has parted with some very helpful suggestions.
My main problem was ensuring I cut off the flanges correctly in the first place - looks like a long evening with the Dremel and some cool beer for me then :D |
