Momo model 7?
I am looking into aftermarket steering wheels. I have heard that the momo model 7 is used in factory race cars so I thought I would look into it as a possible option. However, I can't find any close up pictures of it. If anyone knows where to find some shots of this wheel, let me know.

I think it is the Mod07, and I think it is used on modern race cars. More importantly, I think it is suede finish. I am sure I have seen them in pics of the GT3Rs. Wait, I just checked Momo's site (www.momo.it) and it comes in leather too.
Old race cars used the Prototipo. This is leather rimmed, kicks ass (guess which I have ![]() The Pelican front page shows a Mod07, I think, for the Momo link, but no pics under the Momo section. In any event, buy Pelican if possible. Given Pelican has no pics though... Mod07: ![]() Prototipo (crap picture, sorry) ![]()

Thanks for the info. Darn my website blindness. I checked the momo site and I can only find info about the commando, jet, racing line, Olympic 2000, and others that happen to be sold by pelican yet also happen not to be what I'm looking for. I can't find mod07 or any permutation thereof on the site. Maybe I'm just looking at street wheels and it's somewhere else. Where on the site is it?

Depending on whether my girlfriend is around, I call them "Man-Eyes", to refer to the inability to spot something obvious.
However, you didn't do so bad - they are under "Momo Corse" - as they are, as you suspect, "race" parts. Have a look under the Rally steering wheels. I wonder what they look like (in person) in leather - does it still have the line at the top and are they dished a bit (suede or leather), like the picture looks? Cam |

Yargk,
I don't think that Pelican carries the Corse line, or at least I don't see it on the site. (Wayne, please correct me if I am mistaken.) The Model .07 is indeed the same wheel as the factory has used (in suede) in the Carrera Cup and Supercup cars for some time. The factory item has "Porsche" stamped into the lower edge of the right side spoke. I've come across a couple of these for sale over the last few years, priced between $700-$1,000. A little pricey for the stamping, IMO, but certainly exclusive. As noted above, its also available in black leather. If Pelican can't source, its available from most race supply shops. A good one that carries it is Northstar Motorsports Good luck, Tim A photo of the standard Momo piece, showing the dish of the wheel: Last edited by tchanson; 12-23-2001 at 07:29 PM.. |

Yes it is the same steering wheel as those that come in the Cup Cars. I compared them just a week ago. Except the ones in the Cup Cars say Porsche, where the ones off the shelf, say Momo.
I have the model #07, and like it very much. Last edited by makaio; 12-23-2001 at 08:11 PM.. |

About how far does the Mod.07's "dish" put the rim from the stalk controls? A common issue (in racing at least) with the flat wheels like the monte carlo is that they are very close to the turn signal stalk, unless you run an extra spacer or a removable-type hub.
For my next project, I am debating whether to run a Mod.07 (or Prototipo) for the correct "vintage" look, or something lke a Mod.78 (basically a suede monte carlo), which is a non-dished wheel. For the Mod.07 I figure I'd have to run a standard Momo hub whereas with the Mod.78 or similar flat wheel I could use a quick-release hub. I have short legs with respect to my height, so I don't want the steering wheel "in my face" when I have the seat positioned properly for pedal reach.

The MOMO 07 has about 7cm dish, as compared to 0 cm for the Montecarlo. It is very useful in tigt turns, as it makes it easier to turn the wheel and you don't risk flicking the wiprs on...

I am thinking about using the Mod.78 (basically a suede monte carlo) instead -- It comes in a 330mm diameter (vs. 350-360) and I like the small diameter wheels for track use.

Campbell,
Two details: 330mm is almost ridiculously small for your vintage car. The 350 is quite small already. If you go with the quick release hub, methinks you'd be better off with the type 78, and then if necessary add spacers. Easier to add than remove... BTW suede does not get nice with age. Make sure you have extra dry skin. GeorgeK |

Hi George -
I should have clarified - this will be for a 914/6 race car (not a 911). I've actually been using a 320mm monte carlo in my 914/4 and I love it. As you probably know, knee clearance and overall elbow room are not strong points in the 914, so an extra-small steering wheel gives you a little more freedom. I agree that a 350/360mm Mod.07 or Prototipo is much more appropriate for a vintage 911. Point well taken on the suede...it could get really matted & grungy after a while. This car will be driven very low miles, and often with gloves, so it's not a big concern in this particular case. Cheers,
