79 sc Tach mystery

My 79 SC Tachometer is acting up. It has the initial sign of needing to be repaired. It floats (bounces) around a bit when I push the clutch in; until I get back on the gas and put the power down. Then it returns to its correct position until the next shift. That part does not bother me. I believe that this is easily fixed by that repair shop in Cali.

The strange thing that happens is that after the car sits in the sun it stops working. When I start the car it is dead. No movement. Then after a few minutes of driving it will slowly rise up to the correct RPM and then it works fine from then on.

Not once has it ever done this to me when the car has been sitting in the garage and then started(no sun and cooler temps). Only when it sits out in the sun and then is started.

Thoughts?

I had an full time erratic tach on my 82SC. I cleaned all electrical connections including those by the box under the passenger seat and any grounds in the vicinity. It has solved the problem for my going on a year now. Hope your solution is as simple.

Check the connections and wires on the back of the tach. Check the ground (brown).

Same reply as the two above, check and clean all connections. I had that problem too and that fixed it.

This might be your problem: When my car would sit in the heat the tach needle would stick, it might move and then stop in place. On many tachs the space between the needle and the glass is very small, when the car gets heat soaked the expansion in the tach causes the needle to press against the glass and stick in place. Once the car cools down the problem goes away.

I sent my tach in (North Hollywood Speedo I think) and they installed a very small spacer between the face and the glass. Problem solved.
