Web-Cam wants like $650 to do their 20/21 grind on my cams...(too much)
Crane cams didn't even talk about grinding my cams...they'll sell me a new set for $750 (Too, too much) And EBS offered to do the 964 grind on my cams for like $360 or so. Anyone else have anymore insight...know of any other shops that do this stuff or have any other opinions before I make up my mind? I'm not paying $800 for new cams...that's silly. My machinist says there are NO local shops that do cams....so I am pretty much looking at sending them to someone... Motormiester? I know I know,... I said the "M" word...but I am looking for suggestions. |

I had M/M do mine, I think for around 350$. EBS looks to be reasonable.

Web has some very nice cam grinds for the P cars. I heard from a few people that the web cams for p cars, the cams perform better than the 964 cams. The owner of web cam, his name is Steve, is truly the master of cam grinding. Steve has been doing it for some 30 years, I have used his products allot, none for the pcar yet, and to top it all off, Steve drives a 911 himself. I think the web cam is worth the extra $$.
Just my 2 cents! DRD Darren [This message has been edited by DRD (edited 06-27-2001).] [This message has been edited by DRD (edited 06-27-2001).] |

Elgin cams in the S.F. bay area did a great job on some cams for me a few years ago.
I think it's one of those jobs where you get what you pay for. What you don't want is a cheap price and a cam that loses lobes in the first year. Bruce Herrmann 73911S |

Hi Lee,I've got the 20/21 grind in my 83 and really love them.I run a Saturn dealership so I got them for $495,worth every penny. If you know anyone in the auto industry close buy maybe they could make a call and save you some money just ship from and to that local. If not,I know everyone's on a budget but the quality is super and the turnaround is quick. Good luck, PHP...

Bump.
I will very possibly grind my cams during my head stud repair. So, I am interested. ARe these special "CIS" grinds superior to the 964 grind? Also, where can I find dyno tests of these (CIS) cam options? ------------------ '83 SC |

Superman, I have never seen any dyno test on the cams. I can tell you I have talkrd with several p engine builders, including andial, that have used both the factory 964 grinds and the web grinds. The have all said that the 964 is a little sluggish on the bottom end till around 4000 rpm,and had a good top end. They also said the web grind had a solid hit on the bottom with the same top end power as the 964 power if not a tad more.
I have looked at the cam timing numbers of both cams, a subject I know very well, and the webs are in the middle, of the factory sc cams and the 964 grind. I personally know Steve the owner of web. Not to hipe him up, but Steve really understands gas flow, and knows what it takes to build great power everywere in the power band. just some more info. Darren, the info you give above is already helpful to me. However, I do not understand the relevance of the cam timing issue. I think cam timing relates to installation and valve overlap, but I thought that this (cam timing) decision jsut depends on where you want to set it, rather than a cam having only one specific timing spec. So you see, I don't understand the relevance.
Here is my hope (perhaps someone might benefit from this observation of mine): My car has okay power below about 3500 rpm, then it gets about 50 more horses from 3500 to 4000, and has this excellent power until about 4500 or 5000 where it starts to noticeably drop off. By 600 rpm, those 50 horses are gone again. This is not right for a performance car. I can learn to drive a car that poops out 1000 or 1500 rpm before redline, but I am more accustomed to performance engines just screaming with power right up to redline, or just before. I'd rather have power from 4000 to 6500 than from 3500 to 5000! If the web cam grind gets a wider power band than the 964 grind, with as much or more power in the 5000 to 6500 range, then this is the grind for me. Unfortunately, the best price for me is closer to $300 than $650 ------------------ '83 SC |

Leland,
Elgin cams ground a set of Cams to the 964 spec. I think the cost was around $250 + shipping. I think the turn around time was a couple of days. [This message has been edited by Jim Smolka (edited 06-28-2001).] |
