Fuel evaporation recovery 1970 E

Hi
Can someone post some pictures of a 1970 911E fuel evaporation set up. I seem to have a bad smell of fuel. Think I may have messed up the plumbing some how. I can't see how, as there was almost no pipes in my car.

I don't know if the previous owner ditched a few parts or i have just stuffed it up myself. My car never had a charcoal canister----was it supposed to?

Very fumey when you fill up.

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Terry

The '70 should have a charcoal cannister, an under fender expansion tank and a smaller expansion tank under the windshield cowl.

depends on location

I've been looking into this with my 1970T restoration. It looks like the charcoal canister and fender tanks were primarily (only?) added for the US market. My car was originally a Euro, and didn't have any of this stuff. It appears that for these cars the drain tube coming out of the under-cowl evaporation tank just ran to the front of the car (being joined by the brake fluid reservoir overflow tube) and drained to the ground. I haven't figured out where that's supposed to route through, but might run it through the fenderwell where it would have entered that evaporation tank. I think that's a plugged hole right above the fuse panel.

I think you are right about the vent tube. Here's a diagram of the non-USA cars.

It looks like the vent goes through the front of the body where grommet 46 is located. 43 looks like a T, but the diagram doesn't show a third hose. 48 connects to the vent on the gas tank.

If all your hoses are in good shape, maybe the small expansion tank is leaking.

if it is in a garage you'll smell odors until you put on the US carbon canister, etc. - even if hoses & tanks are ok

Then that may be normal for the non-USA cars. The small expansion tank is vented to atmosphere unlike the USA cars.

Or, maybe the gasket on the filler neck cap is bad.

Yep
Thats what mine looks like and the pipes just end in no mans land inside the hood---subsequently the fumes.

There is no connection to the fuel filler spout either, or any holes in the body pass the end of the pipe to the outside.

Very weird.

Thanks for the info though.

I am very familiar with this issue. My 73 is a European (French) delivered car with the 85L plastic tank and the gas vapors vent though a small hose which exits the car below the front of the trunk. I always smell a bit of fuel, and after any sort of drive, I open my front trunk latch and lift the hood to let any additional fumes escape rather than accumulate in the trunk. My wife thinks that someday the car is destined to blow up.

abisel, what year and model is the euro diagram from? My 71 E had the fuel pump mounted in the rear by the torsion.

That diagram is for models up to 71.

This diagram is for models 71 T/E/S and up, 72 T-V, Carrera 2.7, and 72 T-K.
