Use the official Mercedes Benz white lubricant for this purpose. Not cheap, but I have rebuilt many Webasto sunroofs on older Mercs and this stuff is THE deal.
There is a fellow, George Murphy, via the Mercedes Veterans Digest (http://mblist.mercedes-veterans.com/subscribe/) who will sell you a film can's worth of this stuff. Jw |

When I replaced my cables I went with Pelicans tech article and used no lubricant.
It really makes a dry gear noise now-(...wonder why?) but the theory is that it will collect less dirt with no grease on the cables. Anybody tried it this way or is grease necessary? Bruce Herrmann 73911S |

i highly recommend no lubricant. it drags the cable and collects dirt. the cables are fuzzy, they ride on the fuzz.

I just did my roof this spring. I used a dry graphite lube. It won't pick up like grease and it should keep them from rusting. I used Caterpillars version but you should be able to pick it up at any hardware store.
