help identifying parts
 

My 1987 has a silver module located under the dashboard that looks like the cruise control module shown in the Bentley manual but my car doesn't have cruise control! Did the factory just put this in with the option to provide the rest of the system if ordered that way, or is this likely to be something else? I have a digital photo of it on email (too big) but haven't any software to compress it so can't post the pic.

I also have a picture of some thick black 'goo' that has been spread over the top of the shock strut nut, bolt and plate, where it comes thru to the luggage compartment. Looks like some type of sealant - was this standard from the factory? I doubt it and if it isn't, what could it be for? I'm not keen on peeling it all off at this stage just to discover it was a standard sealant.

Finally, can someone recommend a simple, quick, free, (this guys doesn't want much!) download program for manipulating photos (editing). I did a search on this and found some, but they either were no longer available or were going to take 2.5hrs to download on my 56k modem line! Yes I'll have to buy a Adobe Photoshop or something soon, but I'd like to try my hand first at something free.

Sealant on the shock tower is not factory. Are you sure your car did not come with cruise? Someone will probably know of some small free software for you, but I don't.

The sealant is recommended in the factory manual when re-assembling the front suspension.

Can't help you with the sealant deal, though mine looks to have the same thing.

Every Carrera or SC I have seen has sealant around the strut mount. When you do the wheel alignment it has to be heated with a hot-air gun to loosen so that the caster and camber can be done.

Check the part number on the module and it can be indentified.
