What year is this engine?

I was looking on Ebay and came across this engine. I couldn't find any info about it based on the #s given. I thought for $300.00 it might be worth buying if it is a 3.0(???) and rebuilding it. Could make a nice "backup / spare / race build". Any thoughts are appreciated!

The E was an injected car, so I guess that very well could be the case. Anyone with a rebuild able 3.0 that wants want to get rid of it (Cheap) ?

Did the E use a 7R case? I could be wrong, but think the 7R case is a later model case than the 911E, which was last made in '73 as a 2.4. Did you e mail the seller with more questions? If a factory engine & not a replacement case, there should be an engine number stamped, on the upright at the 3:00 position below the fan opening.

By the looks of it, it looks like a T motor. Can't tell the color of the shroud but, it looks yellow. T=yellow, E=green, S=red. It looks like it has the plate where the mfi bolts to and I think i can see where the injectors would go. Not sure though.

I never got in touch with the owner. It appears by his posting that he knows very little about the engine. But hell......for $300.00 it may be worth looking at for someone wanting a spare they can build to their specs while their car is drivable.

I'm guessing a late 72T engine. I don't think they had 2.2 7R cases, and in 73 they moved the oil pressure sender to a different location. I know 73.5T cases were 7R's. Not sure about 72 or 73T cases.

On the other hand, I see a hydraulic chain tensioner upgrade on the engine. Might be worth something considering a new kit is $300-$400.

The 7R crankcase is magnesium and was used between 1968 and 1975. This engine appears to be an MFI engine with the injection pump drive off the rear of the RH camshaft, and as the US motors went to CIS in 74 this is a 68 - 73 motor, could be 2.0 2.2 or 2.4.

Are you sure they had 7R cases in 71? I have a 71S case and it's a 3R. What cars would the 7R's have been in if not the S's? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying I don't know!

I don't believe the factory MFI'd the 911 until the '69 series (E and S models). If this is the correct air shroud for the engine, it's not a '69 as they were dark gray, green and red.

There, that narrows it down a little.

From memory, the 7R crankcase was introduced with the 2.7 Carrera RS engine but was available in 2 different forms - one with a 97mm bore to take the 2.7 litre (90mm) pistons & the other with 92mm bore to take the 2.0/2.2/2.4 litre (80/84mm) pistons.
The 2.4 litre version was introduced mid-production but could be obtained to use as a base to build up any 2.0/2.2/2.4/2.7 (or 2.8RSR!). Therefore it is very difficult to say exactly what specification this engine is. My guess would be a late '72 2.4T or late'72/early '73 2.4E.

I got my info from Bruce Anderson's Performance Handbook.

Why don't we just get the serial number?

My 73S has a 7R case, my 72 T had a 4R case. I believe the 7R was introduced in 73 across the model range. The 4R case makes a good engine up to 2.7 liters, the 7R must be used for 2.7 and over (seems like somebody posted that here some time back...)

The motor is a 73 t 140 hp engine # 911/51. Got that info from the seller. But said motor was trashed and has been sitting for a long time. Worth a few hundred i guess but then you got to pay shipping.
