Missing key
My '77 911 targa came with just the ignition key -- the one that doesn't lock the doors or glove box -- I guess you would call it the "valet" key, although it didn't come with a valet, either. Is there any way a Porsche dealer or Porsche can supply the missing key? Thanks.

It sounds like the door key would be the original, so take the VIN number and proof of ownership to your local Offical Porsche Center and they will cut the key for you...it's no going to fit the ignition though. The stock key should fit the doors and ignition so it sounds like the ignition lock was changed.

You can re-key your door locks to work with your ignition key. I did this. You will need spare tumblers.

Unless someone made changes or your '77 is not like my '79, the only difference is a groove down the length of the key. The valet and masters are cut the same, the difference in my keys being an extra groove on the master. Check with a dealer or knowledgeable locksmith about this, you may just need to have a key made.
Do NOT assume you need to change any tumblers until you have verified that you don't really have a valet key. |
You don't have to re-key anything! The Red 'valet' key has the same pattern cut in it as the regular full-access Black key! The Black 'master' key has extra grooves. Just go to any key-making location and get a master key cut, and it will have the extra grooves in the blank to open doors, glovebox. and hood of your Targa!!!

I wasn't suggesting that he had to re-key his locks but if there is no alternative it is better than having either not enough keys or too many! There isn't any disadvantage to having re-keyed locks

Thanks all. Just trying to keep myself busy during these long Ontario winters -- although this year I could have driven my car until about 10 days ago instead of putting it in storage at Hallloween...
