Electric windows in G50 Carrera

Hi,

I'm trying to diagnose an electric window issue I'm having with my 88 911. I've been reading on various forums that when you turn off the ignition and open the door that the power windows should stop working. Mine do not...they continue to work. I've been through the electrical system with a fellow Pelican member and as best we can guess, maybe these cars just operate like this.

So...if you own a G50 car, do your power windows operate with the ignition off once you open the door like mine do?

Thanks!

Chris

I have an 88 Carrera and "HAD" the same problem, I'm bettin that if you let the car set for about 2 weeks without driving the battery will go dead.........

I found the problem to be the door switches were keeping the window relay energized at all times allowing the windows to operate regardless of the position of the ignition.
I was going to replace the switches but found a post here on Pelican stating that you could just spray the switch with WD-40 and it would fix the problem.........He was right.

I sprayed both switches with WD-40 and they new work like they should, and the windows only operate with the switch turned ON and I have not had a problem with the battery goind dead (I have been driving it more than usual)

You will also need to replace the rubber switch cover to keep water from entering the switch and causing the problem again in the future.

Good luck ...it's a simple fix

I disconnected the door switches, gently cleaned them with a wire brush, then applied a small amount of dielectric grease before reassembling with new rubber boots. Problem solved.

I initially thought that the window switches in the door were the cause of my window problems so I pulled and cleaned them. They seem to be working properly now. The passenger door switch was not turning the interior lights on and off so I know that was one cause of my battery drain. I wonder if my P/W relay is at fault here. I'll keep testing things.

Thanks everyone.

Chris

That is the way they work on a cab. The coupe they should work till you open a door.

If the door switch is stuck then the lights won't go on and off as they should when you open and close the door. As a result, the power window system doesn't "know" that the door has been opened and the power window keeps working. First thing to check is to be sure that your interior lights go on and off when each door opens and closes. BTW, WD40 is OK but a Electrical Parts Cleaner (spray can at Wally-World is cheap) will clean corroded contacts better.

Umm, isnt that how I described it? You just said it differently.

My 88 cab the windows work whenever the door is open no mater how many times you open and close the door.

I believe the coupe they work until you open either door (one time).

You said "power windows do not work when ignition is off and door opened". I said mine do contrary to you saying they don't.
