What's the purpose of this bracket on the front bumper?

I'm trying to figure out what the purpose of this bracket that mounts to the front bumper on the passenger side is.I forgot to install it when I put the front bumper back on. I'm just not sure if its a critical piece. It appears that its primary function is to make people curse at it when working on the turn signal light we're trying to remove the bolts that fasten the bumper bellows. does it need to be put back on?

It's the famous 'NHSTA-mandated-5-mph-impact-bumper-damage-control-bracket'.
You can leave it off.

Off it shall stay. Thanks!

Is that part already on the weight reduction list?

If I remember correctly, there is only one on the passenger side--its main purpose being to provide extra protection to the oil cooler.

...common misconception.
It's sole purpose is to protect the oil cooler in the event of a collision 0-5 mph. Porsche failed the then-new regulation that the car must sustain zero damage in the event of a 5 mph crash, so their answer was this aluminum bracket.
The backet serves no purpose in a crash above 5 mph.

I've had 3 accidents in my 26 years of driving. None of them involved speeds of 5mph or less. I think I'll be safe leaving it off.
Thanks Bill.

Can this bracket be removed without removing the entire bumper?

anyone? need to get it off due to rubbing of the right front at near full lock. would be convenient if the mounting points are accessible without removing the front bumper.

I think you can remove it after removing the side trim and bellows, but no need to remove the bumper itself.
