Rear Main Seal - Additional Info for Everyone
So I installed a red colored seal a few months ago and it started to leak. This is perhaps I did not install in a little bit deeper than the original one.
Anyways, I ordered a replacement from our host. The unit came in black. I will go ahead and install this today/weekend. Anyways, FYI, I measured the diameter of the springs from each of the red and black seals. The spring out of the black one is a little bit bigger compared to the red one. Red = 2mm Black = 2.2 mm Logically, I think the 2.2 mm would give me a tighter/stronger clamping force. Cheers. |
It would depend on the diameter of the wire the spring is made of.

Huh? I thought they are both made from the same material. Isn't that what we are ralking about? :)
|
I'm not sure about the material the wire is made from.
But you may consider installing the new seal so that the sealing lip touches a unworn area of the crankshaft. (captain obvious considering your initial post) There are threads with information about how to do this but basically you install it so it's not completely home. A little shallower. (hope that makes sense) |
I read all of the threads regarding the install. This site rocks
I used one of the parts from the Porsche bearing removal tool. It has the perfect circumference ---- and I did not have to buy the PVC that one the members used. |
