Knocking Noise

I have a definite knocking noise coming from what sound like the #1 cylinder intake side valve cover. It has been there for about 1.5 months. At first I thought it might be loose valves so I did a valve adjustment and check all the head studs (they all seemed ok). After I was done with the valve job there was really no change in the noise. But now it seems to have gotten louder. Any one have any ideas. BTW it does not sound like it is coming from the tensioner area, but I could be wrong (I have the pressure fed tensioners). My car is a 79' sc. Thanks.

I am interested as well. I have a slight knock from the same area. I also have a 79sc. Curious.

Well, I suppose the #1 intake rocker shaft could have worked loose ... but I would have thought you checked for that when you did the valves ...

Knockin' guys...
Take a long screwdriver or metal rod, put it to your ear, and probe around with the motor running. Don't get your tie caught in the fan :(
Listen in various places for the "knock".

Tensioners, ramps, chains ???? Leave no noise un-checked.

Already tried the screwdriver trick (actually a torque wrench it was longer; same effect). I tried both the chain tensioner and the passenger intake valve cover. The noise was much louder from the valve cover. Its funny that no one has noticed this knocking on their cars before and that they are all pre 1980. I wonder if has to do with the poor oil pickup in these cars. Maybe something was starved of oil.

sometimes a worn wrist pin bushing, or even a rod knock sounds like it's coming from the head area. pull the plug wire off and see if the sound lessens or stops.
