1987 Carrera G50 Lube change
Hello! I recently purchased a 1987 Carrera 3.2 with G50 transmission. 57000 miles, Guards red and beautiful. I want to change the lube in the transmission but am unfamiliar with the process.
If anyone has the process or a web link, tech specs on type and amount of lubricant, suggestions as to the brand, and torque specs, I would really appreciate learning these things. I've been running Swepco in my 1986 951 with great results. Much quieter and shifts well. Also looking to see if there are other Pelicans in the upstate SC area. Thanks! Kendall ![]()

The technical spec book lists the G50 as taking 3 liters of 90 weight GL5 gear lube. There is a drain plug on the bottom and a fill plug on the side. From personal experience I can say that it definitely took less then a gallon to fill it. Torque for the plugs is listed as 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
Swepco made an improvement in the shifting on my car and is generally recommended.

Make sure you loosen the fill plug before you drain, this is to ensure you are able to fill after draining. Good advice that some have posted here. I did mine and it helps the cold gear box shifting.
All the best

some people will recommend Mobil Delvac over Swepco in their G50's. I recommend purchasing the hand pump from our host, it will make the job go a lot easier.

Welcome to PP. Synthetic is recommended for the G50 transmission. I have used the off the shelf Mobil 1 but the best that I have used is the Mobil Delvac Synthetic Gear Oil. It is Porsche factory fill. Here is a link to where to buy. Ln Engineering Owner of LN Engineering is a member here at Pelican and contributes a great deal of knowledge as well
