911S Alloy Engine Lid

For sale on eBay. This isn't mine, but is from the same guy I just bought a set of H1's from:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=599601264

He's also got a complete MFI system up for bids.

Hmmm...I always thought the only cars with alloy engine lids were the 70-71 models?

The '73 'S' lids weren't alloy, at least not the USA models!

And the MFI system isn't complete by any means! It will cost $1K+ to 'complete' ... his 'complete MFI system' that needs cam drive sprocket & sheetmetal, 6 injectors, a Bosch electric fuel pump, part of the linkage, filter/cold-start solenoid assembly, speed switch, and the critical 'T'' return line!

He's got a rather pricey '73 tool kit, too!

For what it's worth, the lid on my '72S is steel, and yes, it's original.

I was always under the assumption that all S engine lids were aluminum! Learn somethin' new every day. Can somebody pin down exactly what year 911S had the alloy lid?

According to Brett Johnson's 'Guide to Authenticity' all '69-'71 S models came equipped with aluminium engine lids.

I've got a steel lid too...oh wait...I have a "T" Frankenstein model. Nevermind!

Anyone know what the weight savings is on the alloy lid? Can't be much. It's one of those things I've never read much about- I didn't know the alloy lids really existed. Anyone have a source on their usage on years/models?

According to Peter Morgan's book "Original 911", '69-71 911 E and S cars had the alluminum deck lid and license plate panel. From what I have heard, some of the very very early production 1972 911S cars also had the aluminum deck lid. All the other production 1972 and 1973 911s had the steel deck lid. The alloy version was used in 1972 and 1973 on some of the factory race cars as well. The price he wants for the alluminum lid is astronomical - I purchased a similar condition one this year for $400. I would guess it weighs about 3 lbs. (maybe 1/4 of what the steel one does).

Wink

And that is why, gentlemen, you see Randy's and other early 911's parked with the engine lids up. THe owners don't want anyone parking their butt on that easy to bend lightweight engine lid! Right, Randy?

I haven't mounted it yet, Paul, but yeah that's a good idea! Aluminum lids also need a lighter duty shock since they are so light and easily dented.

That is why the guy advertises most of his stuff as "unobtaniun"
cause he wants a mint for almost everything...

FWIW. .
Aluminum in the same thickness would make it weigh 1/3 of the steel. (perhaps 1/4 if compared to a steel/galvanized)
If they made the Aluminum lids 40% thicker than the steel, it would have about the same ding resistance of steel; at ~1/2 the weight.
I don't suppose you could check the thickness for us.
