gauge retrofit

I love the look of the early 911 gauges, and it really comes down to one thing - the "billet" center "knobs" on them. I am probably going to be getting my gauges redone soon, but will be doing some of the work myself. I would like to have the early gauge look on my 83 cabriolet. I am trying to figure out the best (read that as cheapest/easiest/most DIY-friendly) way to achieve this. Is it simply a matter of buying old gauges and using these "knobs" on my gauges?
