Kinda a wimpy wheel for a 911.......

911 tweaks 07-19-2010 05:40 PM

I totally agree that 4.5 x 15 wheels are very wimpy...are they rare and/or of any value...??

A friend (a purest mind you :-) ) wants me to look into these for him...he has a 66' 911 I believe & was considering these to replace the heavy steelies...

Please keep the input coming...much appreciated...

Bob

They are quite valuable due to their relative rarity. As always, the value depends a lot on condition. Check with Harvey Weidman as to the cost of restoring a set. You can find prices by searching the For Sale ads here or on Early 911S:
For Sale/Wanted: 911 Parts - Early 911S Registry Bulletin Board
For example a single rim sold for $800 asking and another set of four asking $4100

I don't know about "wimpy"...I bet they'd look really cool with the appropriate application.

They are in high demand in Europe where many of the vintage racing is done to FIA specification and it's one of a limited number of wheels they allow you to run on the really early cars.

A couple of years back I sent two complete sets to a racer in Europe that I was helping gather parts for a '65 car he was buying from me and prepping for homologation. He paid $500 per wheel IIRC. These were unrestored wheels that were going to be used in racing.

Unless you race or show the car and need them for points or rules, worthless IMO....

No, Joe

If you have a car set up for the track (stiff suspension), but want to get back some ride for the street, you can use the 14s with tall sidewalls. Mind you, when you let off the gas on a freeway on ramp, your rear end will feel like it is stepping out. But that is just sidewall flex.

I have a set of snow tires mounted on these. Got the desired result. These 14s were part of an option luxury package, I believe.

thx everyone...am I correct that the original fuchs @ 4.5" wide were 15 tall or 14" or were both offered depending on car...??

Check the date stamp on them. I had a set of 14x5.5 that was manufactured in the 70's and came on I believe a '76 912. It took months to sell them for $400. They were advertised here and on The Samba.
oh, I now see you were referencing 4.5" width.
