how low can u go?

I watch my oil level closely. While I would not rely on the red oil dashlight it made me wonder at what point would the oil light be triggered?
Anyone know?

The oil light gets triggered by there being no oil pressure, or in other words no oil and the engine is probably knackered by that stage.

Does you oil light ever come on during "spirited driving"?

OK! Makes great sense. So why a gauge and a light?

Why a gauge and a light? That's one of the great P car mysteries. Along with; Why no ammeter or volt meter? I guess it could be worse. Ever looked at one of those all digital Corvette dashes? :D Edit: I'm purposely avoiding the gauge set-up of the newest waterpumper cars;)

Why a gauge and light?? Just venturing a guess here, but let's say you glance down every 15 secs to the gauge which I'm betting most of us don't, not that often, at least. If you glanced down and then the oil pressure went away you would probably notice a red light that is not normally on faster than you might notice a gauge that is always bouncing around anyway. Shoot, some dragracers have a big gauge and a big light too, right next to their shiftlight which is right next to their giant tach. Just back-ups for the primary system maybe. Just thinking outloud.
