More mystery parts
It seems as though the bracket shown below held a tank of some kind and the plugged hose connected to that tank. What was the tank for, and why does the car run fine without it?

Yep, that held the canister and the hose is the feed into the intake. Your car is running fine because these are vapor emissions parts and do not relate directly to running. Just be sure no fumes are escaping anywhere along the plumbing in the engine compartment and trunk.

I would have guessed that was the mounting bracket for the fuel filter. Where is the fuel filter mounted?

Ha Ha. Wally you type too fast. . .
Yesterday, Wally (Red 2.7) and I got the engine and trans out of my '74, and that's Wally's red jack visible down there. Wally was a fantastic help in doing this job. Really, he was the driving force and we got the removal done in record time. I want to publicly thank him for his help. My sincere appreciation to you, Wally - it would have taken me ten times as long to do the removal by myself. And, thanks for the loan of so many tools. Met Wally through this forum.

Fuel filter is mounted on the left hand side of the engine bay, in front of the CDI unit. It is connected with the fuel accumulator--look in the side wall area, just beside the engine lid hinge.

Ossiblue you are everywhere!
Brain fart on my part. I did not look at the picture carefully enough. I thought that was the left side of the engine compartment but upon closer inspection obviously it is not.
