The seach for the 993 to replace my SC is finally over . . .
 

Not to long ago I posted a poll regarding keeping my SC or selling it to get a 993. I thank everyone for their views. I have come to the decision that. Newer is not always better.

I have been looking at the 993's, a car I have always wanted, but as I stand in the showroom I look out to my SC. The memories and bonding between me and my car has made the decision to give up the SC very, very difficult . Growing up, my SC was the essence of the word "Porsche". Today, it hold no lesser of a meaning, possibly more so in this water-cooled world.

Yes, my SC may be old, and it will never be a "new" car, but after 3 years of owership, I still turn my head and look back at least once when I park her. I open my garage and stand back just to see her sitting in the garage. I know every rock chip on the valance. I have stripped her down to bare metal and provided new life through a mirror black finish, given her strength through a newsuspension and put life back into her interor. The summer days with the Targa top off can never be replaced with the sunroof of a 993.

During the test drives in the 993s, my wife noticed that the 993 actually receives very little attention. My SC, however, turns heads every time I drive. I am stopped in parking lots to discuss P-cars with my SC. I surprise people when I reveal her age. My wife has always been amazed at the attention and the drop jaw looks my SC receives.

My search is over. I have found the ultimate car parking in my own garage. Yes, I will never get the money back I put into my SC, but the intimacy between us can never be replaced. My SC is more than a car to both me and my wife, it is a member of our family.

One day I will have the 993. But it will not be at the expense of selling memories, experience and member of the family. Like a first kiss, my SC will forever be a part of me. As the odometer rolls past 200,000 sometime during the next few months, I will find solice and joy knowing that I am driving the car of my dreams

So when are you doing a 3.6 transplant? Or are you still thinking about it?

IMHO, the pre-90 911 is the real 911. It was created to become a secular sanctuary for the individual, his shrine to the self, his mobile Walden Pond. No other mechanical device can feed a mans ego like a real 911.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/beerchug.gif

A similar thing happened to me last summer. My friend's 18-year old daughter (who knows absolutely nothing about cars) has seen and ridden in her best friend's dad's 1997 993 many times. When she first saw my 71 she said 'wow, I like the looks of that <u>much</u> better than Megan's dad's car!". ;)

But getting noticed isn't the point. I almost went for a 993 myself. But just like you, I realized it wasn't really <u>my</u> idea of a true Porsche. Decided on the early car and have never regretted it.

After the events of the last 6 months , with both personal and national tragedy of the highest degree, I had found my love affair with my 911SC growing lackluster. Even to the degree of missing the weekly bath and massage and not really caring. I recently acquired a new family car ( a 2001 5 series wagon) and grew further away, even to the point of contemplating the sale of the SC. However shortly after we got the new car , I got up early one saturday and went out and cleaned and detailed the SC. I later went to the store and parked and locked up and walked away. I turned to check the car and There it was , it's heart and soul, gleaming at me with those classic lines and gleaming fenders, the light hitting it just right . I understand your thoughts and feelings re your SC and while I also lust for a 993, I will have it only when I can park it next to my SC . My relationship is what is not what it was prior to this year, but is changing towards a comfort of an old shirt or sweater instead of the driving obsession that it used to be. No matter what, the SC is my personal driving machine , and so it shall stay! Congratulations on your decision.

I had dreams for years, after giving up my 914 in the late seventies, that I had my yellow 914 back. Not until I got my 87 911 did those dreams stop. I had the opportunity to get a 2001 Cab 911 with my wife's encouragement, and I just couldn't part with my 87 Targa. I TELL YA GUYS, We're Nuts! :)

My wife and I are in agreement that our 911SC Targa will be in the family forever.

Now, there may be a time when a nice RS America or an early Turbo comes on the market, and it might join our little P-fest. . . . but the SC stays.

I'll never sell my baby .. it's a 78 SC ... but just as you guy's love hte 993's .. i have a soft spot for the 964 RS..one day I will own one .. or I will simply stuff a 3.6 up the Sc after I strip her down to a light weight ...:D

Its all about character. Had a good friend ...996 cab owner visit me (sans their car...flew in from New Orleans). Told me they loved their car but that mine had tons more character than theirs did. I agree I get jazzed every time I crank it up hear the popoff valve do its job and head out for another commute. I too get the "what year is it?...holy shi* that's 22 years old??? Damn its gorgeous" response at parking lots and stoplights. Wise choice keeping something that is a part of you. Yeah I lust after the 993 also but once again the ol 911SC does draw more attention. May have to do with being an enthusiast as opposed to just an owner. By the way the color helps too Petrol Blue is a real eye catcher. ;)
