Trailering a car from Sac to Phoenix ??

I may drive it there but would like to look into and get advice (not 'advise'...take note all you) on the best way. Edit: Use of advise when advice is the word just bugs me

Would be easy to find a rental open trailer but I really don't think that's the best way to treat my really nice paint. A flapping car cover would likely be even worse. I would prefer an enclosed car trailer but dunno/can't find any rentals on them. U-Haul has one that not advertised as a car trailer but is 6'x12', double axel with a load weight of 2450 lb. Dunno if I could or should consider that. I doubt that U-Haul would like it much.

Anyone have input on this ? I'd sure appreciate some advice. Time frame is Sept or Oct. Will leave my truck there and fly home..then back again and trailer home a few weeks later. If anyone has a trailer I could rent for a month (in the N. Ca area) that would be way cool...

There are ways to protect the car while on a trailer, if you decide to do it that way. No cover on car, as you say. All you really need is some mud flaps on the truck and a hard barrier at the front of the trailer. Not that high, either. Stay away from big rigs.

Although they do clean the road off pretty well as they convoy.

Thanks Milt. I have decent mud flaps but not the kind that I likely should have...really wide. I have seen boat trailers with the barrier but had forgotten about that.

I once saw a car arrive for the Ventura Ca. show wrapped in plastic wrap, no kidding.
Hope they left a start point to get it out of there.
Throw some bubble wrap in there ,rocks just bounce off! and your car will stay fresh along the way.
Wish I had taken a picture.

Keep in mind that in California the speed limit is 55 for any vehicle with a trailer, so this may impact your schedule. The CHP loves to pull people over for "speeding"!

You may want to reconsider shipping with a reputable shipper. When you consider your time, travel costs, ect... I've shipped four times with no issues. Just shipped enclosed for 940.00 from St.Louis area. YMMV

I'd advice you to ask for that advise on a trucking or RV forum...

Axle. Nobody's perfect. We use a toybox type trailer. ..edit.. you might have a hard time finding one of those for your purpose.
I agree with Rick, a shipper would probably be the cheapest and best insured way. Sacramento through Phoenix is a major route.

Just a note on the 6x12 trailer. A 914 is almost 14 feet long, I do not think a 911 would fit (my 911 is 1500 miles away and bumperless, so i can't measure). Also, you would most likely run into width issues, as on those small trailers the walls run inside the wheel wells. If you could find a way to get ramps to attach to even get in it, and you drove it inside, you wouldn't be able to get out. And those trailers rarely have floor tie downs.

Yeah, you are quite correct. I just meas. my SC last night and it's well over 12'.
