Odometer Not Moving , Speedo..OK! - 911 sc
Hi Everyone,
I am the new guy on the Porsche 911sc scene. I am 37 and have loved porsches since i was a teenager from the 80's and now i have one but i have a problem with this used 911 sc that I just bought. The speedo works but THE ODOMETER JUST STOPPED WORKING! So how do i decipher what is wrong and what are the next steps for this job? I will probably replace it myself since i have the car manual and 101 projects book for porsches. I need a little direction before I start ordering parts and yanking things out. THanks, Randal:confused: |
Search for "odometer gear replacement".
Very common problem, happened in my 964 too. |
BTW...Welcome and congratulations on your good taste!

Welcome Randal and congratulations on your "new" car! What you describe with the odometer is typical--broken drive gear for the odometer (they are nylon, I believe, and become brittle and eventually fail.) There are some threads on the board that describe a DIY repair (I'll see if I can locate one) but most send their unit out to a repair shop.
If you're not familiar with the search function, here's how it works: Look at the top of the Technical Forum page, far right side. You will see a "button" that says "Search This Forum." Click on it and when the pull down menu appears, click on "advanced". When the new page opens, on the left side will be a box to enter the terms you are looking for. Anyway, I'll try to locate a thread for you. Welcome again, and post a picture of your car as soon as possible--it's tradition! Where are you in Canada? I just fixed my odometer this past weekend. While you're in there you can put some much better lighting in too if you're feeling like a bit more of a challenge. Search on electroluminescent wiring or EL lighting and you should find some good posts on it.
Good luck. J |
I just had exactly the same problem with the odo on my '82 SC. Pulled the speedo out, took it (most folks would want to ship it, I'd think) to North Hollywood Speedometer. Just $130 later, the whole thing works perfectly. Nice to have it working.

another canuck, mine is broken too, where are the pics of your car?

+1 about NOHO Speedometer. I took mine in for a 1988 cab and they were able to troubleshoot in 5 minutes. turns out in my case the sender from the transmission was bad. However, I had both the odometer and speedo going out intermittently.

How do i put better lighting in there. Is there room to work ...what kind of parts do i need?
