Oil pressure gauge pegged
Got my '79 SC back from the paint shop and now my oil pressure gauge does not fluctuate with RPM's; stays pegged at the top.
Oil level is good. No reason why this should be related to having the car painted, but that was when I noticed the issue. Any ideas on what might be going on? Is the sender most likely toast? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

open circuit in the sender wiring. either the wire is off the sender or the sender is bad. ground the wire and see if the gauge drops. the sender is to the right of the engine fan housing, between housing and a/c bracket, sitting on an angle. not the temp sender which is lower and facing to the rear.

This is a timely post ... I just noticed mine is pegged at 5 as well. I've cleaned the heck out of it to no avail. I've read some prior posts where people say you can crimp the female portion of the sensor that plugs in...but the metal is encased in a hard plastic so it's impossible to crimp without serious force that would likely crack the thing? It does come off the male portion quite easily though, so I'm thinking if I could tighten the fit up it would do it but how to....?
Others suggest tapping on the sender with the hopes that it shakes it back to life...this didn't work for me either. Dan

The wire often hardens and goes bad at the sender so check thelast few inches of it too.

...and if you notice the pressure gauge pegged at the top when you turn the ignition on, but notice it drops to zero when you shift into reverse, you curse yourself for not paying attention to the TWO green/red wires in the wiring harness, and which one switches to green/yellow at the 14 pin connector in the engine compartment.

Sure.... I had to replace one of the the 14-pin connectors that broke - and in doing so failed to note that on the chassis side, there are TWO green/red wires in the harness. These connect to a green/red wire and a green/yellow wire on the engine side of the connector.
One of the green/red wires goes to the pressure guage, the other goes to the backup switch. When you have the connection reversed, the oil pressure sensor circuit is open, and that pegs the gauge. Until, that is, when you hit reverse! Then, you send some voltage thru the sensor, and it fries! Moral: never assume all wires in any harness have unique colors! JB

Wow, guys, not my proudest moment, but I've just realized a goof in my opening of the thread:
I hastily wrote oil pressure gauge pegged when I meant oil LEVEL. Granted I didn't have the car when I wrote this, but... Okay, so Oil Level is pegged...any ideas?

Noted. I've just discovered after closer inspection that the wires are fully disconnected from the sender.

i am also having problems with my oil pressure gauge pegging at 5.
I have tried earthing the wire and just disconnecting from the sender and it just stays pegged does this mean a problem with the wire being broken or disconnected Ocassionally the gauge will work correctley for a while |
