Question about flapper boxes.

Is there an inner flap that closes in conjunction with the opening of the pie slots?

I ask this because I have manually opened the pie slots on the flapper boxes but still get a little heat thru the drivers side. The drivers side has had a rust issue for a few years and has gradually been getting worse. In the pictures below it looks as tho there is a flap inside the box, and if so, then this is my problem as the inner flap and outside pie slots no longer work together.

Before I crawl under the car in this heat/humidity I would at least like to know if I am on the right track.

Looking down the throat, is this a inner flap?

From this last photo it indeed looks as tho there is a interior flap located inside the box and that the two are connected via crimping or spotwelding. I believe the welds or crimps have seperated.

Again the pie slot is wide open and I still get heat. Is it because of a inner flap not closing completely.

I've been under my car dozens of times over the years but have never botherd to take a good look at how this flapper works.

Thanks in advance.

When the slots are open the flap blocks the pipe so heat can escape rather than be directed to the cabin. It's one mechanism. If they are broken. Replace em!

Yes, when the "pie slots" are open the butterfly valve should be closed and vice versa. To get heat into the cabin air flows through the HE's and forward through the open butterfly valve. When you don't want heat the butterfly is closed and the pie slots are opened so that air can continue to flow through HE's and cool them so they don't burn out prematurely.

I had never paid any attention to it. Now I know.

It'll make the task that much easier. For now I just want to close the inside flap to cut off the heat.

A very long screwdriver might do the trick once I'm under there.

Later, "while I'm in there" , I'll make the proper repairs.

Thanks
