New struts = new brakes?

Hi all,

I'm trying to help a friend sort out his 914/6 race car. The struts are modified early boge units: coilover sleeves, raised spindles with steering knuckles bent down, with 3" caliper bolt spacing. The work done on them is crude and not symmetrical (particularly the bending), and the left strut or insert is bent. The car aligns OK with wheels straight ahead, but gets whacky at angles. The car is happy going straight or left but darts sharply as soon as it starts into a right hander. We think a new set of struts would be a good starting point to get this car working right.

The problem is that new struts or coilover-modified new struts all seem to be based on spindles with the 3.5" brake bolt spacing. We'd like to avoid buying new brakes. The existing brakes are Bremteks which seem fine. If we could find coilover struts, such as the ones Elephant puts together, but with 3" brake bolts, we'd go that route. Otherwise the options are to fabricate them out of early "M" struts or to move to the later struts and dump another $2K into new brakes.

After lots of internet searching I don't find any new "M" style struts. Unless someone here can suggest something, it looks like the only options are to build them, or bite the bullet and go for a nice set of Elephant/ERP/Fox/JRZ /Etc. struts as well as new brakes we don't need.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

If you're prepared to wait a bit they will appear. I sold some M struts about 6 months ago and they do appear from time to time as people look for the much more desirable 3.5" ones. Search all those "parting out" sites too... they're in there. In your shoes I'd go for 3.5" and some "S" or wide Carrera "A" calipers.
