Does anyone make repro VIN decals ....

Does anyone make repro VIN decals for the door jam or do I need to make my own by picture and resizing it and printing on decal paper/sheet ?

Thinking of painting the car coming up and wanted to line one up before the project begins .

I've seen other decals at other sites but not the vin decal .

Thanks in advance ,

SxS

You can order a decal from your nearest porsche dealer. They'll require proof of ownership and I think it costs $80. It usually takes 6 - 8 weeks for the dealer to receive it. The one difference I noted on my car is that my vin tag had a white background and the ones they're reprinting have a black background.

Tried to get one for my 76 and Stoddard said they don't make them for older cars anymore. Could I have some info on the decal paper you were talking about? Thanks

Someone in the Early registry (can't find the original thread) was making blank vin decals, you could then punch your own vin number, month and year with a needle ??

By the way, my car is a 1970 and I was able to order a vin tag from the dealer last year.

Staples or other office supply places carry decal paper for a printer . Should be in the isle with transfer ( iron on ) paper .

I've been working in the heat all day and my brain is shutting down , I don't remember if you need mirror software to flip the image for the decal or not .

For me I'm going to try local Porsche dealer first .

If that fails ( which other than being rather old I don't think it will ) I'll make my own and report the progress .

Robmog , looks like your VIN stickers end at 1973 . Is that correct ?

Thanks for replies and advice , SxS

the vin safety sticker was a project undertaken for my 72.
i also made stickers for the other early years.
i thought i researched the matter thoroughly and came up with 3 different versions. after they came back from the printer i found out that in 6/73
porsche KG became porsche AG, some kind of corporate /legal change.
i believe the AG sticker was used into the early 80's
due to expense i am not planning to produce a correct 73 1/2+ sticker.

so,.... technically the last sticker is incorrect for cars produced after 6/73.
however it is otherwise quite nice, correct size, silver vinyl, waterproof, fade resistant.
and it is much better and more correct than what you can get from porsche.

If you can't get a proper reproduction...Mask it off VERY carefully with clear packing tape. The packing tape is much thinner than masking tape. You can polish the tape line easier after the respray.

i agree, if you've still got the original sticker; save it!
but a lot of cars have been repainted already and the sticker is long gone .
that's why i made these up.

Tried to save mine, they are designed to come apart when you lift them off or at least mine is. Got another one from a dealer with much hassle of proving I owned the car.

This is a safety sticker with the VIN and manufacture date on it not the VIN plate those are safely attached in the proper spots on the froame and the A pillar that article is directed at someone who is removing the vin plate and replaceing with a different vin to misrepresent the cars origin.

Seems to me that in my state if I dont replace the sticker with the vehicles vin on it then try to sell it then I am in vioaltion of the law. and also removing the sticker to paint the car could be construed as a violation of the law. Am I correct?

I'm not looking to pull a fast one , I'm looking to keep the door frame authentic

And it's not the steel stamped VIN , just a sticker .

I'll test the water by jumping in with both feet on this one .

I've seen more ole Porsches without door-jam Vin stickers than with that have been resprayed .

Good info from that site you posted .

this is the safety compliance sticker.
it happens to have the VIN punched on it.
and more importantly the date of manufacture, probably to prove compliance with DOT.
it is not the official VIN tag.
if its gone you don't have to replace it.
but if yours is gone i understand why you want to replace it.
that's why i made them.not to pull a fast one over on anyone.
but to help with a correct restoration.
some people don't understand that simple fact.
go figure.

Bob,
Do you have tags now? I could use one for my 72. Reply here and we'll work it out in PM.
