How much internals are the same in 69 S and E engine?
Hi,
I'm just wondering how much of the internal stuff in a 1969 S longblock that is S specific? I know the camshafts, but what else? I have the opportunity to buy a 2,0 E engine, and I'm thinking that is an easier way to get my empty 1969 S case complete, than buying parts one by one. Any thoughts? Thanks, Johan |
The only internal differences are heads, and pistons, beside the cams as mentioned. Some of the S rods were nitride hardened I have read, but were the same size.

The heads for the S are specifically S heads with specific valves size, different than anything else ever produced for the 911.
The nitrated rods have a big S on the side but like Gordon said, the stroke is the same as is the crank with counterbalancers. Bruce |
Thanks guys, based on your input I would say that it is a easy way to get a complete S engine. I have to source the rods, or buy another brand. Or would the engine survive with E rods?
Then the heads, but I have seen them advertized here on Pelican from time to time. Would it be possible to modify the MFI to fit too? Boring the throttle bodies and intakes, changing the space cam in the pump? Regards, Johan |

I would just build it as a 2.0 911E engine. Everything will fit your 911S crankcase. You can put a red fan shroud on it if you want. That will be a great running, stock appearing MFI engine for no additional effort other than a normal rebuild. Keep the 911E rev-limiter rotor in the distributor and keep the revs to 6800. Both of these cases need to be bored for the replaceable lay-shaft bearing shells. Both should have case-savers installed. The oil bypass mod is desirable. You should install the SC chain idler support and I like the ‘Turbo’ (not Carrera) tensioners. Save the green fan shroud and 911E crankcase as you may want them back running someday. This allows you to collect all the ‘69S parts over an extended time. Some (new ‘69S only P&Cs) will be difficult to find. Best, Grady |
I believe with the stock transmission ratio's, the E's were usually faster than the S's at autoX, on most tracks, and on the street, except at high speeds.
Still, a high revving S motor is intoxicating. Your rods should be just fine unless you are going over 7500rpm I suspect. Make it a 2.5 short stroke w custom JE pistons and 2.7 cylinders and it would be over the top. |
Not trying to be disrespectful or hijack this thread, I cant pass the opportunity to link to post of a fresh rebuilt 69 E motor I pulled down to confirm the internals as I was told at the time of sale.
