Gearing change from 16"-17" Wheels
What type of gearing change might there be from a 16" wheel (7" and 9" widths) up to a 17" wheel (8" and 9 1/2" widths) on a stock 1988 911?

What defines the gearing change is the change in circumference of the tires between the two set-ups. What tires are you planning on? What do you have now?

Since you didn't list your original tire sizes, I assumed that they were the same height as the standard tires listed in the Porsche 911 Red Book. If my math is correct, your gearing should be approximately 1% taller with the 17's and tires you have.

Not enough for you to notice. Depending on tires and their weight - and being the rotating mass is more (bigger wheels) you will notice that more than the gearing change.
