Help: Turn Signal Issues, flashing parking lights
Anybody have this problem already? The answer may be a replay or grounding....
When the turn signals flash the side lights flash also... Thanks the vehicle is a 66 911. |
What exactly is wrong? Will the lights flash? Is it just one that is not working?
I have heard of problems with the flasher relay, but that would only apply to a no flash (no pun intended) condition. |

I have a '66 911 as well, so I may be able to help out. I do not exactly understand what you mean with "the side lights flash also". Do you mean that when you turn the signal to right, the lights on the left side blink as well and vice versa? This *may* have something to do with the way the circuitry for the emergency blinker is sort of 'added' to the regular turn signal lights. There is a separate replay for the emergency lights, which is located behind the pedals (yes, a very convenient place to put it). This relay, together with the switch to turn them on, may have a defect causing left & right signal light to operate in tandem at all time. Please give some more info on your problem. |

I am getting a new relay for the hazards as I know this to be defective. I am also looking at getting a turn signl relay.
the car is a euro and has small white lights on the front and the rear lights come on with the first pull of the light switch. these flash also, it has the appearance of strobing brake lights and winking on the fronts as the work in unison. The rh signal causes all four to flash also. So yep, something is reallly messed up. I will check grounds, bulbs and contacts just in case also. |
i would check to make sure there isn't a single element bulb where a dual element bulb goes......when the wrong bulb is used it can short the blinker/parking light terminals together causing goofy problems, i've seen this many times but i haven't had to change any of my bulbs on my 85 yet so i'm not sure which are single/duel element.

Funny, you live in the USA and have a Euro spec 911, whereas I live in Europe (Amsterdam) and have a USA spec 911 (imported from CA in March 2000).
I tried to buy a new hazard relay but they are not available anymore. If you manage to find two (hehe) please let me know, because I might want one! As an alternative Porsche recommended upgrading to the relays and switches that where introduced in 1968 (or 1969). Since I want to keep my car in it's original condition, I opted to do some surgery on the hazard relay itself. After carefully sawing the top of the cylinder of I saw the short was caused by a broken pin that I could replay with a creatively bend paperclip (I'm not kidding). Maybe your car has been upgraded to the newer wiring already. Your problem might be related to the quality of that upgrade :( |
