Buying out of state car considerations?

I am looking/learing about 87-89 911's. Am curious about members' experience w/ buying out of state car (from other to Washington State) and its issues: licensing, PPI, transport, etc.

Much appreciated.

I live in Maryland just bought my 84 targa from PA..there were no issues I did not pay PA taxes, had to pay MD taxes when I registered the car...MD MVA created new MD title...This was my first time buying a car out of state and had no issues at all

Choo....

Bought mine in 07' From Phoenix. Covered transport to Colorado ($1K). Wire transfer for payment to separate account ($5). PPI done in Arizona ($150), results faxed to me (free).

But, I spent 3 months getting to know the owner, and the shop where his work was performed.........Phone bill....$100. "Listen" to what they say.

Regular maintenance issues since. Major service, sound pad, new clutch, re-seal, and a few others'.........

Licensing was a non issue, the previous owner and I 'agreed' on the bill of sale.

The car was as advertised. 3.5 years of ownership support this.

Used the same procedure to buy a 92 Alfa. Zero problems there as well.

Works OK for me, but certainly not w/o risk and peril.

I'll do it again when the right 993 turns up.

My experience mirrors the others. I bought my car in California and shipped it to Maryland. Spent a lot of time on the phone with the owner and his mechanic. The owner sent me maintenence and repair records and a lot of pictures in the mail (before e-mail) before I went to CA to seal the deal. I used a Tag and title service to handle the titling once I received the car. The title service was worth every dime.

+1 on what the others are saying unless you buy a gray market car. Some states are really tough on cars that were not approved to be imported into the USA. Conversions are sketchy, some states are OK with them and some are not. Check the VIN and make sure it is a USA car and not a rest of the world (ROW) car. Not sure about Canadian cars, you may be more likely to see some of them in Washington.

Don't trust anyone who says ROW cars are no big deal - unless it is an old lady behind the counter of the DMV and she is holding a title and registration with your name on it and she is pointing to the cashier's window.

Good Luck,
Mark

the biggest tip i can give you would be to have the ppi done by a pca recommend mechanic who never worked on the car. i could only find one in the area my car came from (whicita) and he was also the regular mechanic for servicing the car. i got an extensive history and it came back with good results but i have still spent quite a few thousand on parts replacing worn out items that i was never informed of.

i flew out there, met the owner, looked over the car and paid him $1000 cash and the rest in a certified bank check and then drove the car home. there is no feeling in the world like driving home your new porsche, so i highly suggest you fly out and drive it home. you will be happy you did.

The key is knowing the seller. If something is fishy then get out. PPI is important so you don't get burned.

Got mines off eBay. Talked to the seller a few times over the phone, wired the funds to his account, got my title which I registered (paid taxes on), flew over, seller picked me up at the airport, had fun driving home (first time ever in a 911).

I wasn't going for a transport unless necessary.
