Installing axle today
Just a couple of questions, the new 8x50mm bolts can replace my old 8x45mm right? Is it safe to re-use my old Schnorr washers? I can't find them anywhere. When my axle separated from the wheel hub, large amounts of grease were released, should I add grease into the end of the axle again. The boots all look to be in great shape, I would hate to mess with them right now.

Be careful that the 50mm length bolts don't bottom out before you tighten them. (hopefully some one will chime in on that.) You're not suppose to re-use your Schnorr washers, they actually crush when you first use them. Try a fastener warehouse of some sort or look up Schnorr on the net, the manufacturer has distributors. Yes, replace any of the grease that has fallen out and also replace the gasket.

Schnorr washers are available from McMaster-Carr under the name Serrated Belleville washers. Check, but I believe it's under their catalog number: 93501A033 BLACK FINISH STEEL SERRATED BELLEVILLE WASHER, 1/2"/M12 SCREW SIZE, .75" OD, .04" THICK. I got a bag of, I think, 50 for about $11.
Good luck, Mike |
Sorry. Should have checked size before I posted. The M8 Schnorr washers at McMAster-Carr are under part number: 93501A030 - they're $9.75/100

+1 for McMaster- Carr for the Schnorr washers as well as many other things,
The washers are cheep, buy the bag of 100 of a couple of the populsr sizes and you will be a hero when you give them to your friends when they are looking for them. Link and a very good simple search function. Regards McMaster-Carr |
Used Schnorr washers are better than no Schnorrs. Not to mention mine and a friend's 915 racecars have never used them and we've never seen them back out. Just check the bolts after reinstallation, and you should be fine from then on. I think a lot of the dropped axles that have occurred are on account of not re-torquing after initial installation.
