What sort of wheels??

Hi Guys,

What sort of wheels are these:

They are for sale in the UK and the seller says they are original 964 wheels. They look more like 944 wheels to me!

Cheers,

Tim.

I believe those wheels were stock on some later model 944s (turbos maybe?) and aslo stock on the earlier 964s.

I've heard the Forged rims like that quite stong and light, thus making pretty good auto-x wheels... but they remind me of something you'd see on a mid sized Mercedes... :)

These are cast "design 90" wheels. They were available in 6,7,8 and 9 inch wide. For the 964 they were 6 and 8s.
They are not to be mistaken with the "clubsport" rims that looked similar, but were forged. The differences are:
- The forged wheels had the spokes go up to the lip of the rim, whereas these design 90 have the spokes "inset", i.e. there is a lip to the edge of the rim.
- The Clubsport have a accent line on the outside of the 7 openings.
- The forged ones were anodised, not painted

Both these models have the modern offset, i.e for 964 and newer, and '86 and newer 944s. And of course the Clubsport are lighter, more expensive, and (yes) made by Fuchs...
Here is a Clubsport- poor pic but you can see the spokes going to the very edge of the rim.

Ah ha!
Bravo george, I knew there was a phisical difference between the two, I just couldn't remember what it was.

The "clubsport" type have amazingly thin spokes.

Like Leland said, those wheels came on early 964's and 944S2's (with different widths). They are pressure cast. Late 944 Turbos came with similar looking wheels that were forged. 944 Turbo wheel, note spokes are flush with edge:

Thanks for the info Guys.

I assume that because they have the 'modern offset' that they won't be suitable for my 1983 SC then?

Cheers,

Tim.
