Post Carrera Cooler

I'm going to be replacing the loop cooler on my SC with a new carrera cooler this weekend. For someone who has already done this before is there anything to look out for. Thanks.

I did the mod a couple of months back. Here are the two biggest obstacles. First, the nuts that attach the stock cooler to the brass hardlines are a pain the neck to get out. Soak them in penetrating oil for a day or two and then when ready to remove heat them is possible with a propane torch. They were still tight but manageable.
Next, the horns will have to be moved forward and bracketed upside down. This is shown in the PP tech article on this website.
Other than that it's pretty straightforward. Hope this helps.

Hello

You have to make the lower support brace and also the upper support. Also the horns have to be moved or use the 3,2L brace for them.

Depending on the year you have to use non stock hoses.

If possible use the 3,2 L front bumper or make the couout in it.

Tom Sharpes had partially done it and is to find on the pelican tech site.

You are also going to need a couple of BIG wrenches. I think they are 32mm.

I had no problem disconnecting my hard lines from the trombone cooler, but be sure to use 2 wrenches. The tubes can be damaged if you don't.

I had the factory lower mount, (It came with the kit) but I opted not to get it welded on. I fabricated 2 brackets that bolted to the factory mount and went to 2 existing threaded holes in the wheel well. One was the mount for the trombone cooler, the other I really don't remember. The finished mount looks sort of like a backwards "L" with the factory bracket at the junction of the 2 pieces. It came out very sturdy.

I also fabricated 2 brackets to move the horns out of the way. The way the horns are mounted from the factory, there is a small mounting bracket going from the center of the base of the horn to a fender/bumper brace. The horns are at an angle sloping down at about a 45deg angle. What I did was make 2 brackets to move them forward and up, so they are pointing down. Here is a quick diagram of the how I relocated the horns:

The left is the factory config, the right is now. The green thing is the new bracket.
I used galvonized band stock, that came from the hardware store with holes every inch or so. It came in a 3 foot strip, and is about 1.5mm thick and 1.5 inches wide. I used the factory bolts to mount the bracket to the car, and the horn to the bracket.

I didn't modify my bumper, but I did make a scoop that attaches to the bottom of the cooler. It attaches to the 2 mounting bolts from the cooler to the lower bracket, and points down at about a 45deg angle and sticks down about 1.5 inches below the valance. So far it seems to be working, and is only noticable if you are looking for it.

The hardest part of the whole thing was attaching the soft oil lines from the hard lines to the cooler. They are only about 6" long, and don't flex very much. It was a PITA to get the threads started.

I know I am kind of rambling, but I hope this helps.

Tom

I went to install the carrera cooler today. I ran into a couple of problems on the install. First the oil lines came off really easy so I thought everything was going to be a piece of cake. But reading Wayne tech article it wasn't very descriptive on how to actually mount the cooler in there. I understand the bottom bracket needs to be welded on. But I thought there was a place to bolt the top of the cooler. Anyone with advice on this install go ahead and speak up. Pictures would be nice too.

MJC on my '83 there is a mount for the top part of the oil cooler right behind the headlight bucket. It is just a metal tab with an indention to hang something on. Your car may be similar. Rich

Yea I don't have anything just the headlight
bucket. I'm thinking I'm going to have to take out the headlight and bolt through to the cooler.
