power surges while driving....
Hi everyone,
Driving my 78 911SC, I've noticed while driving at night that the headlights and dash lights flicker - They brighten for a moment, and then return to normal almost immediately. This happens several times a minute. I also notice that my escort 9500ix radar detector will power off after a few minutes of running. Just before it shuts down, the LCD on the radar detector indicates "Lo Voltage", so I suspect a voltage regulator issue. Anyone experienced similar issues? |

My tach has been bobbing and erratic 500-1000 over. My tech could not find battery problems, the Alt was cranking adequate amps but we suspected the voltage regulator. Tested ok at idle. I plugged in a cigarette lighter power supply and attached the leads to a multimeter. I am clocking 15.03 volts under normal driving which I believe many will agree is the VR. Should be 14.2-14.5. So I am overcharging. Agreed all?
I am now faced with 2 hrs shop time to just replace the $50 VR on my 86 or spring another $250-400 for a new alternator that I may not really need. Hmmmm. Words of wisdom?

Time to check the alternator, regulator. You don't want to fry any electrical components if you are getting a voltage spike. You could put a meter on the battery with the engine @2,000 rpm and see what your reading is. Autozone and some other auto parts stores will also give you a free check on the alternator.

Your problem is your V regulator. If yours has not been updated to the internal regulator - you are in massive luck. The V reg is over by the CD box and you don't have to remove the alternator . Find it an replace it after performing the test E Sully recommends - Look for varying voltage - Should be over 13 volts and steady. It won't be steady.
