install power locks question

my spal power locks arrived today. they look ok.
there seems to be no suggested way(place) to fit the servos in the doors of a 911 (they are universal). has anyone fitted them and can you suggest the best placement?

much appreciated.

i'll post pics when i get my damn digital camera!!!

After taking the interior panel off, the factory power door locks are towards the bottom, and away from the hinge. Basically, there should be two holes , slots really, vertically (one on top of the other).

If you follow the window channel down, if I recall, the slotted holes are really close to, and follow, the rake of this window channel.

I would probably have gone and ordered some used locks and siwtches from partsheaven, as opposed to aftermarket. But whatever floats your boat!

Have FUN!

I just installed the Spal units on my SC to work with my Alpine Alarm. I love being able to just walk up to the car and open the door and just walk away without having to put a key in the lock each time.

The units were well designed and work very well, acting just like modern power locks.

The enclosed bracket with my kit would not span the opening in the door panel with enough clearance, so I bent it into a 90 degree angle (and flattened at the angle to keep the mounting surface parallel with the plane of the door panel) and attached it to the bottom and one side of the opening. It mounted very securely this way.

I also used some red Loctite on the little set screw, which seemed like it would definitely loosen its grip on the lock operating rod otherwise.

Besides running the wires into the door (the hinges look and work great, but running wires is a pain), the only other issue with the installation was that the plastic lock knobs themselves created too much friction within the openings in the arm rests. This was not apparent until the final steps of putting the door were complete. Everything worked great during the many tests I ran with the doors still apart. One of my knobs was cracked anyway, so I ended up finding a pair of aftermarket Ford knobs at Napa that are about a mm smaller in diameter and work great.

Mine is an '82, and they fit and work fine, with the caveats mentioned in my earlier post.

one more question....do the power locks interact with the dial on the door? does the dial still work, etc.?

mr.flat6 01-05-2002 09:54 AM

where can i purchase spal door locks?
tx!

The locks I got are designed to work as a central locking system, so the movement of either lock activates both locks to open or close. Not a great feature for a little sports car where both locks are usually in reach. There is a microswitch inside of each lock motor, so that it can detect the movement of that lock, whether it is from the key on the outside, the round interior knob, or the little thing that comes up through the arm rest. I think Spal also makes a kit that includes a remote module and key fob. If you have an aftermarket alarm, most will activate these locks (you just have the alarm ground one of two wires to lock and the other to unlock) I probably would not have bought them if I didn't have the alarm to work them, since the main thing I was looking for was to avoid having to put the key in the door each time. With the kit by itself, you still have to unlock and lock the doors with the key, all it does is also activate the other door at the same time. Not a great convenience on the 911.

Again...The pic shows the install I did not want..Aside from that my pors. door lock motor seized after 1 yr. and may be used a dozen times. Thought it was electrical.. After 10 hours of going thru alarm and lock motor wiring not finding any elec. problem I was ready to put my fist into wall of garage instead of door window. Figgiting around with my fist trying to wait for insanity to subside I began to tinker with pass door lock manual knob. No logic, just frustration. Lit a fatty and then started playing with driver manual knob. Holy $hit, the mother Xucker was seized. Made in Germany, ordered from dealer. Lucky to have a 911 to deal with instead of Kids. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/fles.gif
