Needs help on my`75 911 engine

Hi guys,
Can you help me solve this problem about my 75 911S engine.I was running @ 60mph and my tach reading was in bet.2,500rpm and suddenly I`ve heard a loud sound underneath as if I hit something and the tach went wild goes up and down and the motor was hesitant to pull.I pulled over and check what happen but found nothing unuseual.I went back home and having a rough ride.I tried to run the motor in neutral idle @1,00rpm and it sounds smooth, but when I rev up to 3,000rpm the tach needle will start to flactuate up 4000+ and all the way down but the sound of the engine still smooth. At first I thought it was a clutch problem, because the pedal clutch is all the way to floor when I do shifting.Your expert comment on this matter will be highly appreciated. Thanks guys.
EDDIE

No positive idea what happened. Did you check distributor points setting?? The "rough ride home" is caused by engine, yes??

Eddie,

Tach acting up can be indicative of points/distributor problems ...

1. Check points.

2. Check ground strap from dist. body to point plate ... if it breaks, it can kill the engine, or cause cutting out.

3. Check the tensioning ball bearing and captive spring cup that puts downward pressure on the point plate ... if loose, can cause wide variations in timing and point dwell angle, erratic running, and cutting out.

Ronin,
I`m not sure if it was an engine. What I thought was either a transmission or clutch related problem, because the car runs smoothly for awhile and all of a sudden the car will slow down and hesitant followed by a loud metal sound underneath and then back to normal ride again until I reached home.
