Another Fuchs wheel question
 
Wanting to go to 8 x 16 rears for my 88 targa & have been told to stay w/ 911 not 951 wheels.
Why?
I see alot more 951 wheels available.

you need to have a wheel w/ an o/s w/i the acceptable range for the application

for a 911 w/ SC/Carrera fenders rear 8s want to have an ET(o/s) ~11, 951 8s have an ET 23.3, way outside the desired range w/o using spacers.

for front the 8 ET23.3 is just slightly short of the desired range but they have been squeezed in.

Bill, I don't understand.
If I am not mistaken, the 951 8's have the same offset and are simply a half inch wider inboard and outboard than the stock 911 7's. How is this not acceptable?

Nope
911 8s have ET10.6
951 8s have ET23.3(early ones, late have ET52.3 and are not Fuchs)

when used on the back of an SC or 911 Carrera the 951 Fuchs sit inboard at least 12.7mm too far, and will need to use spacers w/ that thickness

Graham,

You are actually right. The 951 8" has the same offset as the 911 7" and is a 1/2" wider on the inside and outstide. The 911 8" has the full extra 1" on the outside and the inside face would align with the inside face of the 7". Therefore the 911 8" sticks out 1/2" more than the 951 8" does. Does that make sense?

Alot of 944 guys with early offsets (up through 86) will try to get 911 8" fuchs instead of the 951 ones, because they fill out the rears better.

yes, an early 951 7 is a 911 wheel, and yes it has ET23.3 and yes the 911 8 ET10.6 has all the extra width compared to a 7ET23.3 outboard, which is why it only works aon the back of an SC/Carrera flared car.

We weren't. I was just illustrating the difference between the 911 and 951 8" wheels using the 7" wheel as a base line comparision to answer Grahams question. Sorry didn't mean to confuse. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/sad2.gif

In addition the 911 offset (11) on an 8 makes the rim look deeper. If you are looking for that deep dish appearance then 8's with 911 offset are the way to go (instead of 951 with spacers).

o/s is important when picking the right wheel!

I ran 951 7's and 8's on my SC till I could scrounge the coin for some 9's

yes, the 8's have the 23.3mm et and yes, they appear to sit "inside" on a 911 in the rear. But they fit fine. no rubbing. In fact, the 7/8 combo gave the "look" of running 911 6/7 wheels, due to their smaller lip/dish.

as mentioned, they are the same offset as the 911 7's.. so i really don't see whythe 951 8s are not recommended for the rear of a 911.

And yes, while the 951 7 has the same offset as the 911 7, its not the same wheel as the 911.. it has a narrower outer lip/dish. The 951 7 has more room for larger brake calipers than the 911 7 does, which is helpful if your car, for whatever the wrong reason, also has 951 calipers up front ;)



The other challenge, perhaps not explictly mentioned, is that ONLY 951 wheels from 1986 will work on your 911. All other 951 years are "late offset" and hence, 52ish mm ET, vs the 911s "early" offset of 10-23mm
