Is there any fixing this kind of rust?
1974, non-galvanized (obviously:() Rain water draining down from the targa top has just completely eaten the edge of the weather stripping channel on the door. Surprising it's only on the driver's side, and mostly on the vertical part. Is there any fixing rust in this particular spot? Is grinding off the rusted edge and welding a new strip of metal all the way down feasable? I know there is new full sheet metal available for that part of the door jam, but don't know if it encompasses the weather stripping channel. Thanks in advance for any advice, suggestions. (Also, the car used to be brown, so what looks like rust on the inside of the car, isn't.)

The weather stripping channel seems to be very prone to rust. I'd say that replacing it would be an easy fix. Just fab a new piece out of sheet metal, grind cut off the old, and weld on the new. As long as it is accurately aligned with the position of the original channel and it is the right dimension to hold the seal you should be in business. Mine has seen better days as well so if I can't save it with the grinder, Por 15 and liberal amounts of JB weld I'll be doing the same replacement exercise.
