Depending on how tall you are, and where you need your seat positioned; I stowed my behind my seat. That way it was alway with me in case I needed to secure the car.

If I stored the top off the car, say like you do, I'd hang it up "open". I believe that it being perpetually folded (stretched at the fold points) would not be good for the material.

Oh, man, I've gotta try stowing mine behind the seats - a great idea, if it works with the seat all the way back, the way it must be for me. I've been putting mine in the trunk, where it eats up a lot of room.

I never fold mine into its storage state. I stow it in the "broken" position, with the front and rear arms just unlocked, but the material/arms not folded over. I use two "U" hooks in my garage and hang the top at the furthermost hinge points. This keeps it untensioned but not folded.
Fully folding a Targa top is what give you the two bumps just above the visors and hastens the wind noise. In fact, when storing a Targa model car, the top should not be fully locked to the car top, but instead just in the "clicked" state on the top of the car to prevent seal compression.

I fold mine and put it in the trunk went it is not on the car (just as the factory intended). As far as I am concerned, I have no need to "save" it for the next owner. After all, why diminish my enjoyment?
And if after 37 years it needs a rebuild. So what? I can pay Dan about $1,000 to rebuild it. At a cost of $20/year, why worry?

When I had my targa, I had 2 tops. One 'folder' and one not.
The 'non-folder' was on a shelf in the garage when not in use. The folder sat on the back seats with them folded down. FWIW, the Carbrella top is a pretty handy accessory. I always thought the design needed a few tweaks, but handy to have...

I stow mine in the Trunk. The biggest issue with folding them is doing it correctly. I´m luck enough to have Orangutan arms so I can push with one and pull with the other to fold the frame. Many rest it on their feet and push and thats what causes problems

If I know it will not be needed, in the garage full open if questionable in the trunk just folded enough to fit.
I used to store it behind the seats (71) but I started noticing some skuffing to the interior material around the B pillars, so stopprd that. now the trunk. Regards |

One thing that has kept me from putting it behind the seats is that it will rest open on the center tunnel.
That would be fine if the part resting on the center tunnel is the frame, but it wouldn't be, it would be the material of the top itself, and my worry is that it would become bent and deformed by riding on that fairly narrow point of contact, especially considering that it will likely be experiencing lots if bumps and heavy loads vertically and laterally as you drive along. So, I either leave it unfolded in my garage, or I fold it up. The top's material is new enough to be fine with the flexing every once in a while. I still need to get the top to dan for a full rebuild. I found in the records that the previous owner spent a lot of money having it recovered, but I don't think they did much else. Now, if only I could save up the grand I need to do this.... But there are SO MANY TOYS that I want too. Dammit, I was never good with saving money. Michael |
