Windshield rubber trim molding

I just installed the windshield and rear window on my 73.5 911T and choose not to include the aluminum trim pieces. I like the solid rubber look.

My question is, does the aluminum trim need to be installed in the rubber seals?

Appreciate your comments.

i believe it does. my front windshield on my 80 SC leaked like crazy when i got it because there was no trim. I took it to an Auto Glass center and the guy there had done 911s before. he installed a thick rubber thing in place of the expensive aluminum trim that i didnt want to buy. looks good and it sealed properly

Mine is installed with a piece of black plastic speaker wire inserted into the groove and has survived the rigors of the targa Newfoundland "tour" with out any problems.

Yes it does. It also has to be set into the channels prior to the glass going into the body shell. You can try to squeeze it in using soap dish lotion, etc. but it doesn't always work so very well.

EDIT: You might get away with weedeater trim line in black of a thicker sort than the (is it?) .7 mil. available at any yard store.

I do not believe it is possible to install the original trim after you have installed the window. I don't think any amount of soap will stop you from destroying the trim. Ask me how I know.

It needs to be there or a substitute like the wire mentioned. The glass can pop out too easily if the trim is absent.

I saw a guy use the round plastic tubing that is used to hold screen in a window frame or a screen door on a house. Yea, it has to go in before you install the window.

Thank you all for your comments and advise. I think I will go with the black wire or screen beading. Does anyone know what size diameter I should use?

Why not use the late model type rubber that has no insert?

Thanks HawgRyder. Because, you are the first to tell me that there is such an item. Who sells them?

There is a long thread about using the later 964 seal with the stock glass.

Having problems with windshield upgrade to 964 style.

I took the advise that Trackrash offered , using the 4.5 mil rubber for screened windows and doors. I was able to installed it with the front and rear window in place. I used liquid soap full strength , the roller tool, an awl and a small phillips screw drive. It took some time and happy that this job is completed. Now to move on with my other Porsche tasks. Been restoring this 73.5 911T for 23 years. Thanks again, everyone. Your the best.
